About this book
Red House Readers say...
Sylvie and Carl fit together like Lego. Since they were tots they have been playing with each other, they're "Boyfriend" and "Girlfriend", and nothing's going to keep them apart. That is until a fatal game of kissing-bottle, when Carl's refusal is all too quick from his lips, instead of the long awaited meeting with Sylvie's. Now Sylvie's new bestie is after him, and she is jealous. When Carl starts to rave about a boy called Paul, he gets stranger and stranger, and more withdrawn. Then a visit to Kew to see the glass exhibitions sets Carl into a spiral of despair, but he always has Sylvie to turn to.
We all love Jacqueline Wilson, and this is a beautiful and touching story about love and whom it's directed to. Life isn't always the way it's expected to be, and we are all different as well as similar. This is good to explore and understand, and eventually appreciate. There are some other fabulous books exploring homosexuality, but it might just take someone as well known and loved as Jacqueline Wilson to bring this issue into the spotlight. Who doesn't enjoy her stories! I really think everyone from the age of thirteen to fifteen should read this book, and take in its message: it's OK to be gay!!
