About this book

If I Stay by Gayle Forman is the story of Mia, a talented cellist who seemingly has the world at her feet. However, author Gayle Forman grips the reader with a heartrending twist that teaches Mia to appreciate all that she holds dear. In a similar vein to the much acclaimed novel and film The Lovely Bones, this is a gripping and moving tale that creates a heartbreaking empathy between the reader and the key characters, particularly the brave and unfortunate Mia. With the hardest of decisions to make, which way will Mia's heart bend? Readers from 12+ will be captivated.

Red House Readers say...

Mia, a seventeen year old with a loving family, boyfriend, and with a great future to look forward to, is on the verge of making one of the biggest choices of her life. Should she follow her heart’s desire and pursue her love of music, or should she stay and home and not risk her relationship falling apart? Suddenly, one cold and snowy morning, something terrible happens, and all other choices pale into insignificance in the face of the new decision she has to make. This stunning book is an unforgettable read. Long after I finished this story I am still thinking about it, and the messages it conveys. Far from being a sad and heartbreaking tale, If I Stay is a celebration of life. I came away from the book determined to live life to the full and to make the most of every moment. If I Stay teaches the reader to appreciate what is most important in life, and is a must-read for any reader who wants a thought-provoking, life-affirming read.

"Awesome"

This has become one of my favrouite books of all time. It tells two stories, both about Mia a 17 year old in Oregon. The first begins when school is cancelled because of snow. Mia and her parents and little brother decide to go for a drive. They get into a car accident and Mia is left as a kind of ghost and she has to make the decision of whether to live or die. The second story is told as flashbacks + memories while she is in the hospital. It's the story of the important bits in her life: how she met her boyfriend, the history of her friendship with her best friend, the birth of her brother, how she got into Julliard, + her relationships with the other characters. It's a heartbreaking but happy story, with a large part played by music, and is totally addictive and impossible to put down. Every book lover or music lover should read this. It's awesome!

Life should be amazing and death should be peaceful. I loved this book, it kept me involved about the story even after the last page!!! It is a beautiful life affirming book that made me cry in delight and sadness but is well worth the read.
