About this book

From the Carnegie Award winning author of Junk comes another very dark, very compelling novel that older readers who enjoy thought provoking stories will relish. When Nicholas Dane is sent to live in a children's home, his life becomes a nightmare. With echoes of Oliver Twist, the gripping story of Nick's attempts to thwart the people who threaten and abuse him is uncompromising, unflinching and utterly unputdownable.

Reader review: Nicholas Dane - Paperback - 9780141316338

When Nicholas Kane's mother dies from a heroin overdose, his life is thrown into turmoil. With no living relatives that can be found, Nicholas is sent to the Meadow Hill Assessment Centre. This is meant to be a temporary stay, but once in, it becomes hard to get out. Nicholas' life becomes one long stretch of losing fights with other boys, being beaten 'like a man' and being sexually abused by some of the teachers. He has only one hope left- the thought of escape... This book is stunningly written, and is a harrowing re-imagination of Oliver Twist. Perhaps one of the most emotive stories that I have ever read, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Simply a must-read!
