About this book
Holly can't stand her foster family, her school - her whole life in fact. Then she finds the blonde wig, and everything changes. She rechristens herself Solace, and decides to hitch to Ireland and find her mum. So begins a bittersweet journey as Solace swaggers across the country with Holly tiptoeing in her wake. Will she manage to discover her true self along the way? This road trip with a difference perfectly showcases Siobhan Dowd's gift for mixing humour and sadness.
Red House Readers say...
Holly has grown up knowing only children's homes and social workers but knows that her Mam is out there, somewhere in Ireland, waiting for Holly to find her and start their new life together. Finally, Holly's had enough and her new foster parents are the last straw. Upon finding a blond wig, her path is set and Holly is Solace on the way to find her Mam. I really loved this book and it wasn't at all what I expected. All the characters are interesting and really draw you into Holly's story. You can't see the twist at the end coming at all which makes it an all the more poignant end to Holly's journey. I would definitely recommend Solace of the Road.
The wig changed everything for Hollie. She found it still in its net bag, lying in the bottom of a wardrobe in the home of her new foster parents. Abandoned. Like her, really. Putting it on made her feel different. It transformed her into the gorgeous, sleek, confident Solace, the girl who did what she wanted without caring about the consequences. The wig made Hollie leave. She decided to go to Ireland, to find her mother, to find the sky house. She would hitch hike, take the bus, walk if she had to. But she would get there. This book really let me into Hollie's mind. While reading it, I felt as though I was travelling with her, seeing things through her eyes, hearing things through her ears. I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates the good things in life.
Holly Hogan has been in care ever since her mum left and went to Ireland. For the whole of this time she has had one dream - to go to Ireland 'where Mammy was and where the grass was green'. When her key worker leaves, and her life with her foster parents is not working out, Holly realises that there is nothing to hold her back from her dream. So she dons a blonde wig and becomes Solace, Solace of the road. This was an emotional tale of Holly's dream to find her mother, and to get to Ireland. I really enjoyed it, and I think you will too.

"A bittersweet and moving novel"
Holly Hogan is a fourteen year old girl who has grown up in care. When she gets placed with a new couple, she decides it is time to move back to Ireland to find her Mam and the sky-house-not as herself, but as slim-slam glamour girl, Solace. This book tells the story of her journey to Ireland, and journey as a person to find herself. Siobhan Dowd allows us to see past Holly through her descriptions to see what was really going on in her recollections of her life in Ireland. This makes the book more moving as we sometimes have a deeper understanding than Holly does of what was actually happening. Holly is a very 3D character who is brought to life in this novel, and you can empathise with her as a reader. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.
