About this book

Shortlisted for the Red House Children's Book Award 2010.

Cathy Cassidy's books are extremely popular among younger readers and her brilliant novel Angel Cake is no exception. Anya's family moves from Poland to Britain in search of a better life. As Anya sits in a school where nobody understands her, she dreams of returning to Poland, the place she once belonged. But then Anya meets bad boy Dan and when things begin to fall apart for her, Anya realises that she's no longer alone. Can Dan really be as bad as everyone thinks? You'll soon become engaged in this powerful story of love and friendship.

Red House Readers say...

Anya has moved with her family from Poland to Britain in search of a better life, but finds herself an outcast at school and becomes very lonely. Things change when she meets and becomes friends with Dan, who has been in a lot of trouble and is similarly on the fringe of school. How their friendship perseveres despite the odds and how Anya makes her peace with her new surroundings is described in the heartwarming, sensitive style of writing that only Cathy Cassidy can manage. From the hugely successful author of Indigo Blue and Dizzy, this book is a real treat for readers over the age of 10 - don't miss out on it this summer!

After reading Cathy Cassidy's new book Angel Cake, I have realised how amazing the book actually is. Before reading Angel Cake I read Ginger Snaps and I really enjoyed it. But Angel Cake was amazing and I couldn't stop reading it! The start of the story made me feel really sad and I felt really sorry for Anya. I would hate to move from one country to another and having to leave my family and friends behind. The way that Anya and her sister move from Poland to Liverpool where everybody spoke a different language. That shows how she had the courage and bravery to try and fit in, when nobody really liked her because she had just come to the school and she didn't speak very good English. Towards the middle of the book Anya falls in love with bad boy Dan. She has now started to build her life up again and is liking her new life in Liverpool. But then trouble starts when they are at the school disco, when Lily who has been in love with Dan for years kisses him. Anya saw what happened and ran off. Her life couldn't get any worse. Towards the end of the story Dan and Anya get back together, their lives are now amazing again from there, Lily is out of the picture for good. I love this book so much because it shows you what it would be like to move from one country to another without knowing the language well or the people around you. I can't wait until Cathy Cassidy's next book comes out!!!
