About this book
First published over eighty years ago, Jean de Brunhoff's charming collection of illustrated classics is very much a product of its time with old-fashioned characters and storylines reflecting the 1930s, an era before the advent of politically correct children's books. The stories follow the adventures of Babar the elephant as he becomes king of his people, builds a city, founds a family and even meets Father Christmas. "If you love elephants, you will love Babar and Celeste," writes A. A. Milne in his preface to The Story of Babar. "And if you have never loved elephants, you will love them now."

"Racist imagery and references"
There are some shocking racist imagery and references (i.e. of the "cannibal" "savages") in this book that emphasises an outdated colonial mentality. The book is beautifully presented but the inferior message in this book to people of colour could not be ignored so I sent it back. I'm disappointed that this book is listed as one of the Red House favourites.
RH says: Hi Jill, thanks for the feedback. We have now updated the product description to indicate that The Babar Collection are stories very much of their time and are as originally published. We apologise for any offence caused.
