About this book

Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentisstown, But Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in a constant, overwhelming, never-ending Noise. There is no privacy. There are no secrets. Or are there? Just one month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd unexpectantly stumbles upon a spot of complete silence. Which is impossible. Prentisstown has been lying to him. And now he's going to have to run...

The Knife of Never Letting Go. - an unflinching novel about the impossible choices of growing up - is the first novel for young adults by Patrick Ness, an award-winning novelist and current literary critic for the Guardian.

Red House Readers say...

I absolutely loved reading this book. Before I had even read the blurb I was desperate to dive in and read the novel; the front cover on its own is rather intriguing! The plot follows Todd, the last boy in a town where there are only men, and they can all 'hear' each other's thoughts, called 'Noise'. This idea on its own is an interesting one, which made me think a lot about what it would be like to live in such a town. Todd discovers something that he was told didn't exist, and has to go on the run as he learns the truth about his town and it's residents. As a result the reader is treated to several chapters of building tension as Todd flees from those who are chasing him, and finally the book ends with a massive cliffhanger which left me screaming for the arrival of a sequel. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and I seriously recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good read.

Todd lives on the New World, in Prentisstown. The Noise germs means that everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts, and all the women are dead. Todd has a fog called Manchee, who can talk. As life goes, Todd's is extremely weird. But it gets much, much weirder starting when he met a girl in the swamp. A girl that shouldn't exist. A girl that should be dead. Todd finds out that everything he believes is a lie, and embarks upon a long journey to escape the evil clutches of Prentisstown, and the plan they have for him when he becomes a man.

This book was extremely exciting and I loved every bit of it. I recommend it as a superb book.

The first in a series, this book is a fantastical action/adventure based in Prentisstown, a settlement with no women or children where everyone can hear each others' thoughts. Todd Hewitt, the last boy left in Prentisstown, is persuaded to leave just a month before he is to become a man. He does, and encounters Viola – the first woman he has ever seen! The two are quickly pursued by the Mayor of Prentisstown's army, and on the journey, Todd and Viola learn the shocking truth behind the lack of women in Prentisstown.

This book has many twists and turns along the way, and I can guarantee it will make you gasp! Probably most suitable for teenagers, this is a well-written story with very interesting and original ideas.
