Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction. Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source - the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard. When all hell breaks loose, it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead. Though he's about to discover that being a skeleton doesn't stop you from being tortured, if the torturer is determined enough... A hilarious, nail-biting and surprising book.

Winner of the Red House Childrens Book Award for Older Readers and overall winner of the Red House Children's Book Awards 2008..

Red House Readers say...

Skulduggery Pleasant is a funny detective with magical powers. There's just one thing though, he's a skeleton! In this hilarious, nail biting and surprising book Skulduggery and his sidekick, Stephanie, a twelve year old girl who's not dead, have to defeat an evil sorcerer who wants to take over the world (don't they always?). With vampires and monsters it's not the type of book I would normally read but I enjoyed every word and was glued to the book. It has an interesting and original story line that sometimes had me rolling around laughing and at other times had my heart racing. I really hope that there are more Skulduggery books to come and if there are I'll be first in line! This book should be on everyone's bookshelves.

I thought it was a really good book and I finished it in 3 days as I couldn't put it down. I liked it because I love monster and horror stories. There was nothing I didn't like about it or understand about it and I thought it was a perfect book for a 10 year old boy. I also liked the way the book had an orange spine as I haven't seen a book like that before.

This book is about a detective called Skulduggery Pleasant. But he isn't a normal detective. He is magical and he has no skin, no flesh or no organs. He is a skeleton! He has a sidekick called Stephanie who is a twelve year old girl. Together they fight a wizard called Serpine who wants to take over the world with a magical tool called the Sceptre. Along the way they meet crazy creatures and wacky wizards who help them stop Serpine.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought it was exciting and I couldn't put it down. This is the first children's book Derek Landy has written and I hope he carries on writing.

"Mr Pleasant, you're a skeleton."
..."Yes... I have been one for a few years now."
..."So, you're real? You actually exist?"
..."I'm fairly certain, though... I could be wrong... I could be a figment of my own imagination."

Skulduggery Pleasant is a detective, .though, he's not a normal one. For one thing, he's, well... sort of a skeleton, and for another, he can do magic. Then there's Stephanie, a girl who became entangled in the world of magic by mistake who Skulduggery has taken under his wing.

Some unusual things have started going on and Skulduggery must investigate, though he gets a little bit more trouble than he bargained for. Sure, the troll, the vampires, the rogue servants of the magic elders and even the death of Stephanie's uncle were just about bearable. But when an old enemy of Skulduggery's, an evil wizard named Serpine is trying to get a hold of a weapon that can kill instantly and revive the tyrannical Gods of the magic world, the Faceless Ones so that they can release their wrath upon the Earth, Skulduggery decides that it would be very good for his already vast ego to deal with it properly.

Skulduggery Pleasant is a really great book. Once it's got you under its spell, you won't be able to stop reading - and laughing!!! I don't care if you’re reading something else at the moment, throw it in the fire. I don't care if you don't like this kind of book. Trust me, you'll love it! I don't care if you can't read at all. Learn how to, then read this book. It's brilliant!!!

Skulduggery Pleasent

This book was a thrilling adventure fiction book and I really enjoyed reading it's quick wit and mind-blowing storyline which was brilliant. Best of all is Skulduggery who is a skeleton detective who was killed by Serpine but I won't tell you more because I will ruin it however he's the best because he's humerous, fun and knowledgable, a thing which Stephanie learns when he meets him.I do recommend this read and I'm glad it won the award. I hope Derek Landy writes more beacause this was brilliant and I hope to read the next one.
