About this book

This is an extremely powerful book from Benjamin Zephaniah. The careful and sensitive tale follows a boy as he tries to come to terms with the death of his teacher by investigating not just how but why his teacher died. The book is truly thought-provoking and remains genuinely compelling and entertaining from the first page to the last.

Red House Readers say...

The story is about a boy called Jackson Jones who saw his teacher, Mr Joseph, get stabbed by two of his own students. Jackson knew something was wrong from the start but he couldn't put his finger on what! '"Why stab someone just because they grab your shoulder?" he thought.' Jackson started to get curious and think about it all the time. So he then started an investigation. The headteacher was offering counselling for the witnesses but Jackson was having his own special counselling, his investigations.

Jackson started to realise that there was more than meets the eye to this stabbing. Then the tale starts to dramatically unfold. Benjamin Zephaniah is a very clever writer with some well planned out ideas to leave you on a cliffhanger. When you put the book down you wish you could pick it back up and read more. He has a very different style of writing which makes him stand out.

I would recommend this book to an older reader because there are things in it that a younger reader would not understand and there are things that happen that are a bit gruesome.

I also liked the way Benjamin Zephaniah started the story because you think it is just about another stabbing but it turns out to be much, much more than that…
