About this book

Stanley's family has a history of bad luck, so he's not too surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a juvenile detention centre. Reader review: Holes - Paperback - 9780747544593
"I liked the emphasis on friendship in this novel and the satisfying conclusion"

Another famous writer, Philip Pullman, called this book 'unmistakably powerful' , and I totally agree with him. Stanley's family has been in trouble many times, and when he's implicated in a crime he didn't commit, he's sent to Camp Green Lake in Texas, a correctional facility for young offenders. Life here is really tough, as the teenagers in the camp do the same thing day after day - digging a giant hole. However, Stanley soon makes a friend, nick-named Zero. One day when Zero decides to abscond from the camp, Stanley decides to follow him and sets in motion a chain of events that could almost destroy them.... I enjoyed this novel as Stanley and Zero are so well described that you can almost imagine watching them work in the Texan heat. I liked the emphasis on friendship in this novel and the satisfying conclusion. A definite 5/5 from me!

Holes is a story about an unlucky boy named Stanley. When Stanley gets accused of a crime he didn't commit, he gets sent to Camp Green Lake but this isn't your usual summer camp. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy an interesting story line.

Holes is about an extremely unlucky boy called Stanley Yelnats. His family had always been under a curse, all because of his so-called 'no-good-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather'. Stanley had been accused of stealing and he was sent to a 'detention centre' where he was made to work very hard every day. There he met another boy, Zero, and they become very good friends. Stanley is a hero in this story, because he and Zero stopped the curse from this generation onwards.

I love this book especially the part when they jump back into the past of when Stanley's great-great-grandfather started the curse. Holes is an extremely exciting book about friendship and cooperation.

For a book year 8's are forced to read at school, Holes is suprisingly good. It follows the story of Stanley Yelnats, a boy sent to a reformative camp after being convicted of stealing.

Unfortunately, reading books in school completely ruins them, so make sure you read it outside of school, because it really is brilliant.

This book is very cleverly written around two stories, and is based on a very unlucky family of Stanley Yelnat's. Easy to read, with lots of surprises, and a great plot. Great for people who find it hard to get into a book.

Okay...I admit it. When I first starting reading Holes by Louis Sachar two years ago, I got to about the fourth chapter (the chapters are extremely short) and quit. I thought the book was confusing and uninteresting. I mean, who would want to read a book about kids digging holes??? Well, all that changed when I read the entire book two years later (present time). It has now become one of my favorite books. Louis Sachar has a very creative and beautiful writing style which I enjoyed thoroughly. The book also had a little mystery and suspense added in which kept the reader's attention. These are just some of the reasons in which I enjoyed Holes.

I thought that this book was easy to get into, and by half way through the book you felt like you knew the characters! The story line in good and is extremely hard to put down! All the loose ends come together at the end of the book, and for those of you who have seen the film you will love the book!!!

This book was suberb after reading a bit of it in English class I then decided to go and buy it and finish it off before anyone else did. I would recommend this to anyone! I think this book is better than the film though. But if you haven't seen the film then your missing out on it!

I saw this book on the shelf and immediately put it back down. Remember never judge a book by its cover. I looked at it again and decided to read it. It was incredible how can you write such an interesting book about digging holes. Anyway, it's amazing I recommend it to anyone who can read a book all day long and has a sense of adventure. The only problem is it takes too long to get going.

This book is great. At first I thought it would be rubbish but after I read the first few pages I couldn't put it down. My sister doesn't like reading so I gave her Holes and she reads all the time.
