Reader review: Duty Calls: Dunkirk - Paperback - 9780141332192

James Holland has written lots of historical books for adults. His first novel for younger readers is described by the publishers as 'gut-wrenching, handwringing, blood-pumping real-life action'. The novel follows Private Johnny Hawke who, at the age of only 16, has to take part in the Second World War. This novel vividly describes the turmoil and violent reality of war. For me, a ten-year-old, some of the descriptions of war and its machinery were too realistic but the book will definitely appeal to readers over the age of 12 who are interested in history.

Reader review: Duty Calls: Dunkirk - Paperback - 9780141332192

France... World War II... one of the last of his battalion... food has run out... the Sergeant is wounded and Private Johnny Hawk is wondering why he joined the army. A few days earlier, up at the Cassel, outnumbered, out gunned, Private Hawk was fighting for his life. But when they were told to go to Dunkirk to be evacuated, Johnny and his friends believe it to be a suicide mission but a mission they must go on if they want to stand any chance of surviving. The question is will they make it to Dunkirk alive. This is a fast paced, paged tuner of a book which I couldn't put down and I recommend to anyone who loves stories about World War II and action adventure in general.
