About this book

Jenny Downham's novel Before I Die has an amazing energy and wit that makes the heroine's story even more poignant and moving. Sixteen-year-old Tessa has been battling with leukemia for years and has been given just a few months to live. But with typical teenage obsessiveness, she vows to work her way through a To do before I die list. Jenny Downham has created a perceptive and bittersweet novel guaranteed to make readers laugh and cry uncontrollably. Suitable from 13+.

The novel has been adapted into a film entitled Now Is Good starring Jeremy Irvine as Adam, Dakota Fanning as Tessa and Kaya Scodelario as Zoey.

Reader review: Before I Die - Paperback - 9781849920452

Tessa is only 16, and dying of leukaemia, but despite this, she's determined to make the most of the time she has left. Realising that she won't be able to do all of the things that normal girls do, she makes a list of ten things she wants to do before she dies. Tessa really wants a relationship with someone and when the boy next door says he loves her, her hope in life is sparked. But when the hospital tells her she is getting closer to death, all of Tessa's hope vanishes and she starts to question his love. It is only when it is too late that she realises he loves her more than words could say. This book is so sad. It made me rethink life for a bit. It made me appreciate what I have more and made me feel part of the book.

Reader review: Before I Die - Paperback - 9781849920452
"Tessa is one of those characters that I would love to have as a close friend"

This book is about 16-year-old Tessa, suffering from cancer and running out of time fast, she writes a list of 10 things she wants to do before she dies.

This gripping story will have you in tears by the time you're done. The way Tessa is portrayed makes her seem so believable, like she really exists. She wants to do things that most other teenagers think about doing, she just has less time to do them. Jenny Downham shows understanding of teenage emotions and feelings which definately makes the story more effective. Tessa is one of those characters that I would love to have as a close friend. During the story I grew to love her rash decisions and wild ways which made the ending even more sorrowful. I would definitely recommend this book to other readers.

This book is about 16-year-old Tessa who has leukemia but she wants to complete a list of certain things before she dies. This book had me laughing and crying throughout and is beautifully written. The most thought-provoking book I've ever read. It will stay with me forever.

""I've never had a book make me cry...this one did""

I read this book a week ago and I'm still thinking about it. It had only taken me 3 days to read this heartwarming book. The copy I bought had all these reviews on the cover and one of them was: "This book will make you happy to be alive", and that was this book did. Tessa is 16 and dying so when the doctor tells her she hasn't got long left she makes a list of things she wants to do. She works her way through her list with the help of her loved ones but some things are just impossible due to them being in the future. A future where she's not there. This book explains loss, love and death in a beautiful way that made me laugh and cry. This is not a sad book nor happy but a mixture of both. I've loved this book and I know anyone will who reads it.
