About this book
Set against the backdrop of World War I, Soldier Dog is Sam Angus's powerful story of young soldier Stanley and his ever-loyal messenger dog. It's 1917 and in the trenches of France, dog handler Stanley is a boy fighting a man's war. Stanley's dog is so loyal that he will cross no-man's land alone under heavy fire to carry a message that could save countless lives. But this journey is fraught with danger and only the bravest will survive. In this horrendous situation, Stanley soon realises that the loyalty of his dog is the only thing he can rely on. Perfect for fans of War Horse and Michael Morpurgo's other wartime animal stories, Soldier Dog is a warming, sincere and emotional read.
Red House Readers say...
It's a great read! It's World War One and Tom is a young soldier posted out to fight in the trenches. He leaves behind his younger brother, Stanley, their Dad and their pet dog. While Tom's away, the dog has some puppies and dad decides to sell them - except for the small, weak one which he wants to kill. Later, Stanley manages to trick the army into accepting him as a soldier, despite being far too young, and he ends up on the front line where his lvoe of dogs leads him to look after a messenger hound - a soldier bulldog. This dog dies and is replaced by a new hound., and Stanley soon gets to love it, but what is the secret behing the dog's loyalty? This is a story all about the loyalties between humans and animals, coupled with the horrors of warl. It's a bit like the excellent War Horse, only with fewer horses and more dogs, but with just as much adventure, fear and compassion - it's a great read!
