About this book
Fans of World War Two novels will be gripped by this well-researched adventure. Archie Jackson is a 19-year-old Spitfire pilot who appears briefly in James Holland's Duty Calls: Dunkirk. In Duty Calls: Battle of Britain, Archie takes centre stage as one of the young RAF pilots who are called upon to risk all to defend their country as it faces an imminent Nazi invasion. Well-written and full of intriguing details about the experiences of RAF pilots, this book pitches young readers into the heart of one of the most famous battles in British history.
Red House Readers say...
This is a great casual readThis book is about two friends, Archie and Ted and how they join the RAF during World War II. At first, they love the camaraderie but as more of their squadron disappear, they get more and more sombre and when they get a new squad leader, they take to disobeying him and get kicked out of the squadron and reassigned. The two friends argue, especially when Archie falls in love with Ted's sister. Archie is repeatedly getting shot down and wounded while Ted stays in the air. This is a great casual read and I would definitely read more books by James Holland.
"Recreates the horror and sadness of war for a whole new generation"Duty Calls: Battle of Britain by James Holland, set in 1940 during the Second World War, tells the tale of 19-year-old pilot officer Archie Jackson, and his friend Ted as they are called upon to risk their lives to defend their country as it faces a Nazi invasion. We see the friends fight the Nazis, and argue with each other while Archie finds love despite his difficult circumstances. This novel offers action, excitement, danger and romance, while giving the reader a realistic view of war and the pain, loss, and gut-wrenching sorrow it leaves in its wake. James Holland has created a novel with an absorbing plotline which clearly recreates the horror and sadness of war for a whole new generation to experience and learn about. The author also pays special attention to the historical details throughout the book which makes it a thoroughly enjoyable, easy read. 5/5
