I wonder whether your friend has read Jacqueline Wilson's recently released book Cookie? The book is about a girl called Beauty who is a plain and timid girl who after an unbearable birthday party at the hands of her Dad's temper, runs away with her mum to an idyllic seaside resort where their new-found freedom and a moment of culinary inspiration give them a hobby, an income and even a new nickname for Beauty.
The other one I m going to recommend is the, Karen McCombie Set. These 3 books are fab girly stories, but like Jacqueline Wilson tackle important life issues.
